Anja Kotar Announces New Single
“Writers & Lovers”
a danceable Indie-Pop reflection on the people who make history and the people who preserve it
The Bay Area-based pop singer-songwriter, producer, and classically trained pianist continues her literary-inspired Bookstore album with its history-book chapter, accompanied by a self-directed backyard music video
San Francisco Bay Area, CA — May 2026 — Bay Area-based pop singer-songwriter, producer, and classically trained pianist Anja Kotar returns with “Writers & Lovers,” out May 28, 2026. The single is the latest chapter in Kotar’s ongoing Bookstore album, a project released song by song, with each track inspired by a different book genre, title, cover, or bookstore discovery.
Inspired by a book cover titled Writers & Lovers, the song became Kotar’s “history book” entry in the project: a bright, danceable indie-pop meditation on the two archetypes that shape civilization. On one side are the writers, thinkers, philosophers, artists, and historians who preserve what happened. On the other are the lovers, builders, leaders, and risk-takers who live boldly enough to make history happen.
“What would the world be without the writers and lovers?” Kotar asks in the song’s chorus, turning a philosophical idea into a hook built for movement.
Lyrically, “Writers & Lovers” moves through ancient Roman imagery, from the Pantheon and Ovid to Julius Caesar, the Colosseum, the Forum ruins, Bacchanalian dances, and “empires under dust.” The song frames human history as a recurring performance, with “same book, different pages” and “same roles, different actors,” suggesting that while our tools and costumes change, the central roles people play remain strangely eternal.
The production deliberately contrasts the density of the lyrics with a bright and kinetic pop arrangement. Written and produced entirely by Kotar in her bedroom studio in Northern California, the track reflects her hands-on approach to building cinematic pop worlds from the ground up. Driven by an acoustic guitar hook and layered with sparkling synths, “Writers & Lovers” also features live strings and a pizzicato breakdown bridge, bringing a classical shimmer to its playful indie-pop frame. Sonically, the song sits between the diaristic intimacy of Gracie Abrams, the narrative pop songwriting of Taylor Swift, the theatrical color of Chappell Roan, the emotional bite of Olivia Rodrigo, and the glossy guitar-driven motion of The 1975.
The single will arrive with a music video directed and edited by Kotar herself, filmed in her backyard as a DIY extension of the Bookstore album’s cinematic world.
“Writers & Lovers” follows Kotar’s continued exploration of literary and visual worldbuilding in music. Born and raised in Slovenia and now based in Northern California, Kotar earned a Master’s in Music Production from Berklee College of Music and has built a catalog that has surpassed 10 million streams across platforms. Her work has received coverage from Earmilk, Wonderland, Notion, Paste, The Line of Best Fit, and Music Connection, and her single “Movie” was used in a viral TikTok video with over 14 million views.
Known for cinematic, sunshine-y pop that romanticizes everyday life, Kotar writes, produces, and records her music from her bedroom in Northern California. With “Writers & Lovers,” she turns a bookstore discovery into a sweeping but playful thesis on humanity: every generation needs people who live the story, and people who write it down.
“Writers & Lovers” is out May 28, 2026.
